Diving Areas
The indonesian archipelago consisting of 17.000 islands is the largest archipelagic state on earth. Here you find 20 % out of all existing coral reefs.
MARI DIVESAFARIS offers 2 of the most spectacular diving areas of Indonesia, only reachable by safari boats: National Park KOMODO and National Park TAKABONERATE / SELAYAR
National Park KOMODO
The National Park Komodo is located between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores (province of Nusa Tengara), approx. 400km east of Bali and belonging to the group of the Lesser Sunda-Islands. The National Park was founded in 1980 and since 1986 UNESCO- World Heritage Listed.
At the moment the area covers about 1817qkm with more than 50 islands. Among them the main islands Komodo, Rince and Padar. Soon the island of Banta will be also belonging to the National Park which will then cover an area of 2321qkm.
The diving area with its 50 explored diving sites (so far) is very unique and diverse including: coral gardens, sea walls, pinnacles, overhangs, and undersea mountains. The area with its strong currents enable a richness of corals (more than 350 species), fish, crustaceans and molluscs. You can see about everything from different species of sharks and turtles, huge sponges, giant fish schools down to the smallest crabs and shrimps, a real paradise of biodiversity.
The waters are rich of plankton (especially in the southern part of the Komodo National Park) so there is a good chance to see rays and the magnificent whale shark.
In the northern part of Komodo National Park the visibility under water ranges from 20 to 30m average and the water temperature between 25°C to 29°C. In the southern part due to colder currents with lots of plankton, the temperature can drop to 22°C, and visibility varies between 10-25m.
The endemic Komodo Dragon (lat.: varanus komodoensis) lives on the islands of Komodo, Rinca, Gili Motang and Flores. The dragon has first been sighted in 1911. This carnivorous species can grow up to 3m in length and weighs up to 140kg and lifespan ranges from 30 to 50 years of age.
A real highlight is a visit with a National-Park Ranger.
You are getting to Labuhan Bajo (Flores), the starting point of our dive safari to the Komodo National Park via a domestic flight (duration 1h 20 min from Bali). All ticket prices and National Park entrance fees are listed under »important travel information«
